Began research by first looking at examples on the brief, the film from film club then set off research by scrawling through video sharing sites and search engines to try and find a range of stop motion clips or videos.
Link to the “the town called panic “research: https://deathlake.wordpress.com/2015/10/27/a-town-called-panic/
Possibly the earliest example of stop motion:
“The humpty dumpty circus” 1897 directed by J. staurt blackton, no footage can be found of this. Upon research apparently it’s about circus with acrobats and animals in motion. Apparently they used someone’s daughter’s small circus dolls, what had jointed limbs, what made it easier to add movements.
In conclusion after researching this, made me think about the importance of joints and finding characters with joints to make it easier to move. For when to shoot the actual finial piece.
The earliest viewer-able stop motion.
The Earnest Watch-able animation, goes under the name “ Le Mobilier fidèl “ made in 1910 what was created by Émile Cohl in France. It was a mixture of stop motion of found objects and pixilation, in black and white.
Street of Crocodiles
This is a example of a Oscar wining short “Street of Crocodiles “ what was made in 1986 and created by The Brothers Quay and It was filmed in the Uk.
It had multiple camera angles, it was hard to follow what it was exactly about. The only thing I can gather from it, was that it was about screws moving, unscrewing and tunneling into sand, one doll walking and watching while the other dolls seem to be creating, experimenting near the end. It could have symbolized how parts are missing while people are trying to find the missing part or over time things become lost or broken over time, unusable or unfix-able.
In conclusion: after watching this video it made me think about timing and for the final piece there’s not enough time to do a subtle story therefore planning to possibly make the story glaringly obvious what it’s about because of the 30 second time constraint.
Jan Švankmajer “last trick”
Jan Švankmajer (born 4 September 1934 in Prague) is a Czech surrealist artist. His works include several different median. He is known for his surreal animations and his work had been major influences as such as for example Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and many more.
His video titled “Last Trick “made in 1964 where the majority is made from video while some sections made by stop motion that initials a sequence of photos. Throughout the video, the two magician like creatures made of paper Mache tries to outdo each other with various tricks, after each trick they hand shake, what becomes more and aggressive. Their last handshake and their last “trick “ they rip each other apart and make each other “ disappear “. This is a perfect example of the characters trying to eliminate each other, therefore looking at this was relevant to the project.
By looking at this video it also made me think about how the characters can leave the scene for instance parts of them at a time is destroyed and gone until the scene is left with nothing.
An example of a short film” Dimensions of Dialogue” what was made in 1982 and directed by Jan Švankmajer it was filmed in Czechoslovakia.
Thought this video was interesting how the characters eliminated another (what is part of the brief therefore it is relevant looking at this video) how things become so small it becomes Claymation and the items that gets eaten over and over eventually becomes unrecognizable to what it used to be.
Junk head, Takahide Hori 2013
Junk Head 1 is a 30 min Surreal Stop Motion Horror made by Takahide Hori made in 2013.
The stop motion consists of creatures that had evolved from human ( elimination of the original human race). They had found a helmet containing a human head, they create him a body so he can survive however the human does not understand why he has a body made from trash parts or what is happening around him. At first he understands his creators, but unable to remember his past however after a bang to the head he remembers his past but forgets his creators and no longer understands his creators. He escapes the creators of his body being chased by creatures with him to only be pushed down a cliff in broken parts (a form of elimination). Therefore looking at this film was relevant because that’s an example of elimination and part of the brief is about elimination.
Change: The Happiest Stop Motion Video Ever
Made in 2007.
Looking at this video was relevant because it’s a stop motion with found objects and the current project is about stop motion with found objects. In animation for instance the ketchup scene it has the illusion that they are eliminating each other by attacking each other with their condiments.
Throughout the video the objects: has the appearance of changing to another object, increase or decrease in size, change colour, amount of objects increase or decrease, move and rotate in circles.
Searching. A stop motion animation by Guldies
Guldies created the animation in 2 Sep 2012. It’s a stop motion using clay motion.
Looking at this video was relevant because it’s a stop motion and this current project is about stop motion. The second reason I looked at this video is because of the way the characters becomes formed, what appears to “eliminate” the other character for example a foot with a mouth eating the blue square or the baby character eliminates itself.
Tomato. The Tragedy. (A stop motion short)
Looking at this video is relevant to the project because the project is about stop motion and elimination. The video is mostly stop motion while having the theme of both fruit and vegetable society eliminating him. They had digital speech bubbles overlaying on top of the video. Most of the animations actions was really slow with still images displayed for a long duration of time, what made the video boring.
In conclusion after watching this video, for when it comes to creating the final piece for the project. Is to not have still images displayed for long periods of time and to at least move the characters or inanimate objects a bit from frame to frame.
Pumpkin Gnocchi-Stop Motion
Made in 13 May 2010 by alpokofilm. Looking at this video was relevant because majority of the video is a stop motion and this project is about stop motion. Thought this video was interesting because for the majority of the animation, the ingredients move as if showing you how to cook them to create “pumpkin Gnoochi”. In a way the ingredients are getting eliminated while their corpses are used to create a dish.
In conclusion: after watching this animation, it made me think about how in the final piece the characters can eliminate each other than create something new.
Game Over by PES
Looking at this video is relevant because it’s a stop motion video and how the project entails of it having to be a stop motion. The second reason why looking at this video is relevant is because how in their animation they “eliminate” characters and use found objects, this is also part of the project brief. Thought it was interesting how they recreated old retro games with found objects and used the same sound affects you would hear in retro games.
In conclusion for the final piece I need to think about appropriate music or sound effects that would go with the animation to create the correct atmosphere and contribute to the story.
Fight! “- 20e Festival national du film d’animation de Bruz
Looking at this video was relevant because it’s a stop motion and in a way the character are trying to “eliminate” each other in the bid to win, by eliminating and making the opponent lose. It has a comical and silly atmosphere to the animation because of the pairing of the music, facial expression and how at the end they are both being civil drinking on the same table as if the earlier drama between them didn’t happen. The purpose of the animation seemed to be to advertise something.
THRONE – ‘THARSIS SLEEPS’ (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
Looking at this video was relevant because its stop motion. Thought this video was interesting because don’t see much stop motion that incorporate embroidery. Another reason why looking at this video was relevant because they have themes of elimination for instance the universe, inhabitants and zombies for example the brain getting eliminated by another zombie.
In conclusion after watching this video: that embroidery is an option that can be done for the final piece, however it’s unlikely because of the time constraint and embroidery takes a ridiculous amount of time, the amount of time can be cut down with computerized machine embroidery. Another conclusion is that in terms of elimination it doesn’t have to be a full person, but an elimination of body parts or inhabitants.
Batman VS Joker Stop motion 蝙蝠俠VS小丑
Made by Counter656 in Jun 26, 2015
Looking at this video was relevant because it’s a stop motion with found objects and the project entails about a stop motion with found objects. Another reason why looking at this video is relevant is because the characters trying to eliminate each other, in which elimination is part of the brief.
The bases of the video is just a fight with two groups. Thought the video was interesting because the effects added in post-production for instance the explosions, flares and smoke, as well as how the objects “fly “through the air.
In conclusion: after watching the video need to think about camera angles and the possibilities of adding effects in post-production. To think about is if for instance things “move through the air “. Also in what way the objects would be supported and removed when editing if for example use wires. Another point to think about is the use of appropriate use of sound effects, music and its timing of them.
♫ Kill the Patrick ♫ by Magic Bricks (stop motion)
By magic bricks in Mar 22, 2015
Looking at this video was relevant because it’s a stop motion about a character eliminating other characters, as well as found objects, therefore looking at this animation is relevant to the stop motion elimination project.
Another reason why looking at this animation is relevant is because in our finial piece we are planning to use Lego characters, in the animation they use Lego characters. Looking at the way they move the Lego characters can be useful as a point of reference when it comes down to the final piece.
Throughout the animation the character appears to be going through the same motion only the character he is eliminating is different each time. In the animation its only music overlaid on top, no sound effects, got bored watching this animation really quickly. The story line of the animation seems to be a character coming across a new place and killing everything he sees for the sake of killing. Later on it seems like he joins up with other characters to do the very same, to destroy the peace of the land of what they do not know. Alternatively the characters might think they are doing a good deed by killing what might appear to be dangerous creatures, in their eyes.
In conclusion: after watching this animation need to incorporate different actions, to not just overlay music but also incorporate sound effects so the audience don’t get bored in the final piece. Another point to consider for the finial pieces is to try and create a clear reason to the actions of the characters.
Pigeon Steals Money – Funny Stop Motion Animation by Mr. Stevenson
They uploaded it on the 2009, September the 24.
Looking at this animation is relevant to the stop motion project because the animation is a stop motion and in a way the animation has a theme of elimination; the pigeons are eliminating the person money, by somehow pressuring the person to give it to them with their intimidation in numbers or cuteness.
