Finding dory marketing
Quotes from article:
10 dorry marckting.jpg

They held a giveaway, the voice actor of “dory”Promoted the film by talking about it in her tv talk show, this reached out to parents of children that could take their kid to watch the film. Making at least 2 sales per kid going to watch the film, since a child is normally  accompanied by an adult.
13 dory

When the trailer came out with 2 female adults push a stroller,  people  thought  the humans  was lesbians. The controversy trended on social media  and even the newspapers created articles about it. Most people was positive about  the idea of a lesbian couple however some was completely against it and wanted to boycott it.
14.JPG

Found these statistics of the age of people, gender and their other interests, that searched up finding dory or Pixar in general. Could not find  statistics for young children or actual statistics of the age of the audience who went and saw the actual movie.
In conclusion: going to think about the type of people that like  a certain genre and what other things they may be more likely to like is well, to incorporate that to In the concept.

Toy story 3  2010
15 toy story
Age Certificate: U

20 miinions.JPG

In Hong Kong they had mini themed play area and photo opportunity’s. This allowed people to take photos with the life sized figures, share on social media and people they know would find out about the movie and possible share it on to people they know.  In a shopping centre. Mcdonald had done an exclusive Hong Kong minion themed menu “summer bello party”.

In conclusion:
Need to think about  the region and what marking campaign  is suitable for different places. Need to consider  a  Anthropomorphic character, since it may be more marketable then humans, like  what the despicable me has done.

(Primary research photos of the cup and tic tacs )They created a line of minion tick tacs for their despicable me line.

Promo kit pt 5: age rating

Cinema audience distribution in the United Kingdom (UK) as of 2014, by age and gender

1 no logo thing

Most common age group is 15- 24. slightly larger number of males for example in age groups 7- 34 watch cinema compared to females.  The lowest age group is 55+ is the lowest amount at between 5- 10% , 45- 54 is the second lowest about  at 10% therefore there is less financial sense to target anything to that age group.  The downside of this information is that it’s from 2014, so it might be considered outdated.

Decided to look at the different age ratings, what age can watch what  age rating and what makes it that age rating.

In conclusion: Through the British board of film classification.  12A, PG, U everyone can watch and not denied entry to watch.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

In conclusion: R18 is porn and the least amount of people are going to watch it. Going to avoid coming up with content that reaches this age certificate.

Toon and actor pt9: feedback

smaller-finail-pieace

Asked people on an art sharing site where they didn’t know anything about the project, to reduce bias. Also asked some people in person.

1)      What does the characters resemble to you and why?
2)      What does it look like is happening?
3)       Any keywords come to mind? ( eg atmosphere, thoughts on character relationship,  art style, key items ect)
4)     further info/likes/ dislikes and why/ Improvements?

Toon and actor pt8 character

Finial piece smaller finail pieace
Added: extra lighting, darker shadows, a sky, eased the line going through the body, after feedback. Also erased more of the background form the photo of the hand, smudged the edges to make it blend in more, added a  bit more colour and detail. To make it look less flat.

,…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Because of the short duration of the project, decided to do rough sketches of the first thing I was chewing on while re-reading the brief, But with eyes.

The first idea was to draw a drug addict pen on top of a photo of mess.
2 drug addit
First tried redrew its head digitally first.  Played around with the placement a little. It looked off putting.

Feedback: it looks like a Mexican
In conclusion: going to draw something else.

Took photos of my hand, stuck it in photoshop and sketched out a concept.
1 1280 x 720 TAG 4%.jpg

4 thing 1280 x 720 TAG 17%.jpg

Laid some shades on because I wasn’t sure on colour.
Feedback: where’s the sky?

29/03/2017
TAG-100-%-GIF-from-10-and-10.gif
It looks like a purple underwater scene for some reason. Showed a tinted version and non-purple tinted one to someone.

Feedback: I prefer the non-tinted one, I can see the sky more. However, the purple contrast more with the pen more.   The scene is dark already, you should make the shadows darker, only slightly. Because they look too soft. You should erase the line going through the body, its looks weird.

Toon and actor pt7: Idea

This is the rough hashed out idea.

Idea 1:
Pen world with their little pen societies. Some with scare stories while some with stories of heaven.  Human abductions, taking their life essence ink.
documentary style following the lives of the pens with claims of abduction by the humans.

For example:
– A crazy drug addict   female pen. How while she was a young lass being courted by the richest man in the area. During her meal she was abducted.  When she was returned, she was a broken mess with all her clothes in tatters, her head chewed up, no man wanted her used up state, all the female high pen societies shunned her. She details her plans of revenge.

When the people tell their stories they have flash backs, either the  human hand comes into the animation world or the pens come out into the human world.

-A mother seeing her kids get taking by a hand why she pushed them on the swing set.

– A fountain pen, give a tale of the world he seen traveling in the pocket plane, before and after each use, the human cleaned them with a soft cloth, handed them with care and always made sure to  refill their life essence.

– A guy in a hospital pen “it was horrible, oh no not again” then a human hand takes him and shoves him in a shredder.

Live action
someone using a pen, the pen comes to life   with a cartoon axe and hacks the person to death. Lots of Pen eye blinding.

Idea 2:
(character: a manic drug addict pen with a tin foil hat)
A script of a pen going through what fits, what don’t, pros and cons of each animation type mixed with live action, production costs, believability, relationship and impact  on audience, examples.

27/ march / 2017
Feedback: the shredder do not make sense.
It doesn’t make sense that the mother is pushing them on a swing set.
The pocket plane makes sense because people carry pens; a pencil case is cramped.

In conclusion:
Instead of a shredder, the person is either being shaken or stepped on.
Instead of a swing set, the children could be playing noughts and crosses/ head bobbing game.

Toon and actor pt6 pens

Aesthetic research: fountain pens and quill’s.

Victorian pen
1 victorain pen

Eye dropper fountain pen
2 droper victorain pen

Feather quills
1830’s a metal nib on a feathered quill was more commonly used.
3 quill

1884 Ink cartridge within fountain pen was invented
Fountain pen:
4 cartirge pen5 cartridge pen
In conclusion: going to go for a generic cartridge fountain pen design, so people would instantly recognise it and make it look more modern then a quill.
Going to incorporate the gold rim, the clip on the cap, the pointed nib.

Toon and actor pt2 initial research

As a starting point, I looked at: Live action character in 2D world, 2D character in live action world, 3D characters in live action world and live action characters in 3D world. I had also looked at some film budgets to compare costs between live action and 2 different animation practices.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (from “Mary Poppins”) – Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke
Marry Poppins 1964

Live action in 2D world. Everything looks out of place and forced. No eye contact of the live action characters and cartoon characters, cartoon characters have no shadows, the colours don’t match.

a-ha – Take On Me (Official Video) 1984

2D character in live action. Live action into 2D world.  When the live action character goes into the 2D world she is drawn as a 2D character. When the 2D character goes into live action world he is shown as a 2D character until at the end he transitioned into a live action character.  The context that its 2 separate worlds, doesn’t make it seem out of place.
In conclusion: context is one of the key elements to see if the 2D character seems to fit.

Amaro and Walden’s Joyride 2015
https://vimeo.com/128418807
2D characters in a live action world. Carma level mainly at the level of the 2D characters. The camera angle make it seem like the 2D characters are in a different world, exploring. The 2D characters look like they visually fit the live action world.

Halifax with a Scooby doo 2017
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4l0XNZF6hk

2D character into live action.  At the end the 2D characters are back in their own 2D world.

They both seem out of place because of the style of 2D but seem to fit because of the context and the colours aren’t too bright compared to the live action.

Space Jam (1996) Official Trailer – Michael Jordan, Bill Murray Movie HD

Live action character in a 2D world. 2D characters in a live action. It somewhat looks plausible because of the context and lighting of the characters however mainly Seems out of place especially when the live action go into the 2D world.
1 space jam
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) M0vie – Bob Hoskins & Christopher Lloyd & Joanna Cassidy

2D characters in live action. “cartoon set” made colourful, while the 2D characters are coloured darker to somewhat fit in the live action world. The 2D characters have exaggerated movement and shadows. At near the beginning of the film the “cartoony set” looks like it has bright colours of a cartoon.

Budget ( in 2015 conversion) nearly $139 million.

Parasyte Part 2 Live Action Film – Official Trailer

3D hand and creatures in to live action. Looks like the 2 worlds fits into the one world.  From the trailer   the 3D characters looked believable because of the realistic skin and teeth textures.

Attack on Titan: Live Action Trailer

3D characters in live action.

Ryuk explains shinigami eyes – Death Note

3D character into live action.  Seems somewhat believable. Ryuk looks like he fits the most however rem Looks straight out of a video game and out of place on top of the live action.Ryuk has realistic looking hair and furry costume bits.   They both having lighting and shadows. Rem not as much as ryuk.

Death Note (2006)
Budget: $20,000,000 (estimated) by imbd

Ted 2 – Official Trailer (HD) 2015

3D  character into a live action.  Because the character is somewhat realistic and looks like a bear, he looks like he fits the live action world.

Paddington Teaser TRAILER 1 (2014) – Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville Movie HD
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-d-V9jXYDE

3D character into a live action.  Looks like the 3D character fits the live action world. Probably due to the detail  and how realistic it looks.

THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER | Official Teaser Trailer | UK | Paramount

3D character into a live action. The characters still look cartoony and slight out of place in the live action however it fits the context that they’re from a different world.  The lighting and shadows make it seem believable. They only become 3D in the live action world while at the beginning in their own world they are 2D.

“Bare Necessities” Clip – Disney’s The Jungle Book

The 3D characters look realistic to life  so it looks like it fits and not out of place.

Production Budget: $175,000,000

In some sections its live Acton characters in a 3D world. Because it looks so realistic, it visually fits.

Quote “ over 900 people at Weta Digital to work on the film’s digital after-effects.”

Avatar – Making Of (Part.1) Creating the World Of Pandora [HD]

Because the movement is captured from the actors through mo-cap, projected on to 3D models. little nuances of movement make the characters look believable full of emotion a lot quicker and more difficult for someone to try and animate that. Then again because its mo-cap they still have to pay someone to apply animation techniques after, for example: anticipation, squash and stretch.

“Origin of Love” – Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3oSc8gMrGo
2D overlaid in live action footage for a few seconds.  Context of a story where beforehand it was just cut screens to the 2D animation. So, it makes sense.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl Movie CLIP – Happy (2015) – Alexander Skarsgård Movie HD

2D character in live action the context of imagination. The set up beforehand makes it seem believable. That the 2 worlds are clearly separate, the believe ability of the 2D character placed in the live action footage seems down to the context that she is imagined.

ANCHORS AWEIGH (1945)

2D character into live action. Jerry looks out of place.
Quote from  “ threemovie buffs”
4 anchor aweigfh.jpg
The one scene where Jerry is dancing with an actor cost them $100,000.
Entire film budget: $ 2,580,000
Who Framed Roger Rabbit – The 3 Rules of Living Animation

In conclusion if it’s an animation on top of a live action, the characters need to have matching lighting, shadows, have eye level with the live action characters, interact with the live action set movement of the items from the live action set to make it seem somewhat believable to the audience.

In conclusion: lighting and shadows can make or break believe ability.
-Context can play in if the character seems out of place or not.
-2D characters with shadows and lighting on top of live action makes it look purposeful, without it makes it very irritating to look at and seem out of place.
-2D characters, people automatically assume its “imagination” or a separate world.
Colours of the cartoon characters need to somewhat match the live action footage to make it look like it belongs.
-If 3D models don’t look photo-realistic, it can easily look out of place combined with live action.
